Step by Step Guide for Stove Installations

Are you looking to add a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove or range cooker to your home and not sure what’s involved? Here we cover from start to finish what can you expect from a professional and hassle-free installation process by one of our stove fitters.

If you can, we would always recommend visiting our showroom first to speak to one of our friendly and experiences sale team members. They will be able to go through all your requirements and guide you to the most suitable stove solution(s) for your setting. This will also help our installers, once they come out to site, to better understand the specific requirements and cost of installing your chosen stove(s).

1.    Site Visit

All starts with a free of charge, no-obligation site visit by a HETAS-certified installer to ensure that the correct log burner stove and appropriate flue have been selected and complies with regulations.

During the visit, our engineer will make sure that the stove you have chosen is suitable for the setting you wish to place it in, and the heat output is going to be sufficient, but not excessive, to comfortably heat your space. This includes checking any required distance to combustible materials and allowing sufficient air flow within the room and around the appliance to allow for optimal working conditions.

They will also discuss the most suitable flue systems with you and go through any options with regards to types of system, colour options and where the flue is going to run and terminate at a suitable height above the roof. The two most common flue option are a flexible flue liner which is commonly installed into an existing chimney, or an insulated twin wall flue system which is normally used if you do not have an existing chimney system in place. The twin wall flue system can run directly up through your property and out through the roof, or can be taken externally out through a wall at a 45º angle and run up the outside of the property.

2.    Quotation

Once the site visit has been completed, our installer will send their report back to our installations team in the office. You’ll then receive a detailed quotation by email which includes the appliance, flue and chimney materials, labour, hearth and scaffolding if required.

Our team will also outline any works that need to be arranged by yourself prior to our team coming out to complete the installation. This could include, having an existing chimney swept, removing any combustible materials situated too close to where the stove is going, or opening up an existing fireplace to create a suitable recess for the new appliance.

We will always be happy to answer any questions you may have at this stage and can often put you in touch with relevant companies who might be able to assist with any works that we are not able to complete ourselves.

3.    Installation

Following your approval of the quote, and payment of a 50% deposit, we’ll then agree an installation date with yourselves that’s booked into our diary. At this stage, we can allocate all of the stock to your order and get everything in place with our scaffolders and any other sub-contractors as required.

Delivery of the goods will either be arranged by our own transport for the closest date before installation that our vehicle is in your area or brought to site by the installers themselves. To make this process easier, we will complete a thorough delivery to site form with you. This allows us to make sure that our delivery vehicles can easily get to site, and the goods are left in a convenient place for both you and our installers once they arrive to fit. Where necessary, we can arrange for additional people to come to site to help lift heavy items over any steps and other obstacles that we may need to clear. We also have boards and other lifting devices to make sure we can get everything where it needs to be. Having gained over 50 years of experience moving heavy and sometimes awkward items, our logistics team won’t be phased by the challenges posed by many rural Devon locations.

Our HETAS-certified engineers will then install the log burner, flue, and any other necessary components as necessary. During this process, your new appliance will be commissioned, and all necessary regulatory requirements will be double checked. Once you and our installers are happy, the appliance will be certified. As part of the installation process, you will receive a complete handover where our installers will talk you through your new wood-burning or solid fuel stove. How to light it, operate it and any cleaning and maintenance required to keep it working at its best. You will also receive a free-of-charge first lighting kit, which contains enough logs and kindling, as well as matches and firelighters to get you started.

If you require additional firewood, we do stock and deliver a wide range of kiln dried logs and kindling products. Visit our website here or speak to a member of our sales team for more information.

4.    Aftersales Service

In the unlikely event that any problems arise, we provide a full after-sales service which includes a free call-out if required by one of our fitters. All our installation work comes complete with a 12-month warranty as per our terms and conditions. Many of the manufacturers we deal with also offer extended warranty periods when purchasing a stove through an authorised dealer. These will often need to be registered directly with the stove manufacturers online. Always read the documentation that is supplied with the stove carefully and thoroughly. If you need further assistance, please contact a member of our team who will be happy to help.
